Developing mechanics and engineers not drivers

SCU Motorsport NEWS

SCU Motorsport is seeking expressions of interest for the purchase of a battery system to support the development of an electric single-seater race car.

Our preliminary performance requirements specify a total running time of 40 minutes, based on the following use case:

– Paddock/garage to assembly area: 5 minutes (low performance)
– Assembly area to grid: 3 minutes (low performance)
– Warmup lap: 3 minutes (60-70% performance)
– Race: 20 minutes (80-100% maximum motor performance)
– Cooldown lap and return to Parc Fermé: 5 minutes (50-60% performance)
– Parc Fermé to paddock/garage: 4 minutes (low performance)

Testimonials

"I am passionate about Formula Student. However, it is focused on Design and Development in Universities. There is a currently a hole in the education system that should not be there, and that is the education of those more directly involved in the maintenance and setup of the race cars. The SCU Motorsport program has the potential to fill that hold and create the motorsport mechanics and race engineer of the future, and providing a fair and competitive environment for them to learn"
Willem Toet
Sauber F1 Team Manager & Chief Designer
"Motorsport UK are excited to be privy to the ambitious plans SCU Motorsport and look forward to collaborating as these plans develop. The programme has the potential to deliver the relevant skills and experience needed for future mechanics and engineers who want to pursue a career in motorsport"
Sue Sanders
Sue Sanders
Director of learning & development at Motorsport UK
"I first became aware of SCU Motorsport at the F1 in Schools STEM programme, where they are supporting local schools and promoting engineering. Many colleagues within the motorsport industry are telling me that there are shortages of appropriately skilled mechanics with relevant practical experience, so it was interesting to learn what SCU Motorsport is doing. By developing a unique and innovative race series, specifically for colleges and universities, it will offer the potential for delivering the practical skills and experience that I believe is needed by motorsport teams, manufacturers, and suppliers. SCU is focused on creating pathways for individuals seeking motorsport industry careers, which I believe offers a different approach by providing a high-level of practical experience in the real, highly competitive world of motor racing"
Brian Sims
Founder of the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), ex Commercial Director at Benneton F1
"I truly believe that the industry needs this new concept of car to bring on the next generation of engineers and mechanics. Goodyear prides itself on helping to develop new talent and see this as a great stepping stone on for young men & women to start their motorsport journey"
Mickey Butler
Head of Motorsport Goodyear (UK)

SCU Motorsport The Driving Force Behind Motorsport Education

Brings you Formula Ed, the integrated motorsport education programme. Formula Ed is the first race series to focus on developing mechanics and engineers not drivers.

We are designing a single seater car specially for the series, with a focus on learning, as none of the currently available single seater race cars meet the needs to support the programme.
