Interview with Race car Engineering

24th January 2024 – Alan O’Neill of SCU Motorsport travelled to London to do an interview with Daniel Lloyd of Racecar Engineering magazine. Daniel asked some very probing questions about motorsport education – and he was surprised about many of the responses. He then undertook further research to build a more robust picture of the […]

The Skills Gaps not being covered in Motorsport Education

Silverstone 2019 – We were interviewing a young female Team Manager who is Neurodiverse, and she was describing how she struggled with the traditional education system. We were then extremely lucky and saw legendary motorsport recruitment guru – Russel Howard of Racestaff.com. We asked if he would mind doing a quick interview to capture his […]

Motorsport Jobs: Is motorsport education a route to working in F1?

An article we cowrote with Adam Arbon of Autosport in February 2018.  It highlights areas that need to improve and what SCU Motorsport are advocating to improve the provision to the motorsport sector.

Is Motorsport Education delivering what is needed by the sector?

The answer is no! This is a video we made in September 2018 that highlights the issues.as This video was originally made as part of an application to Virgin Voom to seek funding as a way of building momentum into the project. We refer to an article from Racetech Magazine that describes the situation in […]

Ufi VocTech Trust champion the use, of vocational technologies […]

Race Car Set-Up Masterclass

SCU Motorsport delivered a Race Car Set-Up Masterclass to UTC Oxfordshire. We used Augmented Reality to demonstrate how to perform set-up tasks on a race car and then asked them to perform the tasks on a real car – the outcome was achieved, the students did not need any additional guidance and set the equipment […]

Testimonials

"I am passionate about Formula Student. However, it is focused on Design and Development in Universities. There is a currently a hole in the education system that should not be there, and that is the education of those more directly involved in the maintenance and setup of the race cars. The SCU Motorsport program has the potential to fill that hold and create the motorsport mechanics and race engineer of the future, and providing a fair and competitive environment for them to learn"
Willem Toet
Sauber F1 Team Manager & Chief Designer
"Motorsport UK are excited to be privy to the ambitious plans SCU Motorsport and look forward to collaborating as these plans develop. The programme has the potential to deliver the relevant skills and experience needed for future mechanics and engineers who want to pursue a career in motorsport"
Sue Sanders
Sue Sanders
Director of learning & development at Motorsport UK
"I first became aware of SCU Motorsport at the F1 in Schools STEM programme, where they are supporting local schools and promoting engineering. Many colleagues within the motorsport industry are telling me that there are shortages of appropriately skilled mechanics with relevant practical experience, so it was interesting to learn what SCU Motorsport is doing. By developing a unique and innovative race series, specifically for colleges and universities, it will offer the potential for delivering the practical skills and experience that I believe is needed by motorsport teams, manufacturers, and suppliers. SCU is focused on creating pathways for individuals seeking motorsport industry careers, which I believe offers a different approach by providing a high-level of practical experience in the real, highly competitive world of motor racing"
Brian Sims
Founder of the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), ex Commercial Director at Benneton F1
"I truly believe that the industry needs this new concept of car to bring on the next generation of engineers and mechanics. Goodyear prides itself on helping to develop new talent and see this as a great stepping stone on for young men & women to start their motorsport journey"
Mickey Butler
Head of Motorsport Goodyear (UK)

Brings you Formula Ed, the integrated motorsport education programme. Formula Ed is the first race series to focus on developing mechanics and engineers not drivers.

We are designing a single seater car specially for the series, with a focus on learning, as none of the currently available single seater race cars meet the needs to support the programme.

As an organisation with a strong history in being a fertile proving ground for some of the sport’s most celebrated engineering talent. The 750 Motor Club is excited to be involved in the innovative plans of Schools, Colleges and Universities Motorsport and are hoping to collaborate further with these plans as they evolve further and look forward to assisting in these bold ambitions taking to the track.

The unique concept appears to have huge possibilities in offering opportunities for students to gain both relevant skills and practical experience in order to prepare them for future careers in motorsport, something that will help the UK remain at the forefront of motorsport engineering and development for years to come.
